Tip of the week: Meal voucher or financial payment - does the employer have a choice?

The current possibilities of providing catering for employees remain unchanged:

- in own or supplier catering facilities,

- through meal voucher.

The obligation to provide a financial contribution to defined groups of employees also remains.

From 1st of March 2021, the possibility of providing a financial payment will be added for employers. The choice between meal voucher and a financial payment for meals will be exclusively on the side of the employees!

The employer is obliged to give the employee the opportunity for statement. The rules for choice should be established by the employer in an internal regulation to avoiding chaos and unnecessary administration. In the internal regulation, the employer can set up the entire choosing process so that he fulfil all requirements and at the same time adapts the process to its own conditions.

Not all employers will be required to give an employee a possibility of choice. Some employers will not have this obligation at all, some will have it from 01.01.2022 and some will be affected in few days from 01.03.2021. It depends on the way the employees catering is provided and on whether and until when the employer has a contract with the catering company.
