Tip of the week: Is the deadline for filing a tax return and paying the tax coming?

14. 9. 2020

In our recent articles, we have addressed various measures related to coronary crisis. While last week we informed you about the ending possibility of deferral of insurance premiums, news about the drawing of the contribution from the First Aid project and also news about drawing the rental contribution, today we bring you information about the tax area and the deadline for filing a tax return.

The calculation of the deadlines for filing an income tax return and paying the tax currently depends on the date of the end of the pandemic period. This period began with an extraordinary situation declared by the Government of the Slovak Republic from 12 March 2020. According to the law, the current deadline for filing a tax return and payment is until the end of the following calendar month. Taxpayers can, under the conditions defined by law, extend this period by up to 3 months, in some cases even by up to 6 months.

While the state of emergency ended on 13 June 2020, the emergency still persists. However, the Minister of Finance of the Slovak Republic, Eduard Heger, has already informed that in September 2020 a proposal to end the emergency situation by the end of September 2020 will be submitted to the National Council of the Slovak Republic in an abbreviated legislative procedure. That means that tax returns must be filed by 31 October 2020, or until 2 November 2020, as the end of October falls on a Saturday. However, based on the considerations expressed by the Minister of Finance of the Slovak Republic, it is possible that the deadline for payment of the tax will be postponed.
